HVAC System Guides

How Climate Affects Your HVAC System Choices

When choosing an HVAC system for your home, keep in mind that there is no HVAC system that is “best” for all applications.  The right HVAC system for your home and family depends on your personal situation including your budget, how long you plan to be in the home, the climate where your home is located.

For example, the right HVAC system for a home in the Phoenix area might be all wrong for a home in the California area.  Phoenix and the surrounding areas experience some of the hottest and longest summer weather in the country.  The average high temperatures are over 100 degrees for June, July and August and highs reach the mid 80’s in April and don’t drop back into the 70’s until November. The winter months are among the mildest in the county with high temperatures in the mid 60’s. A good HVAC contractor in your area will know the best system for you.

When selecting a system for their HVAC replacement, homeowners should be less concerned about the energy efficiency of their heating system and more concerned about the efficiency of the air conditioning system.  Maximizing the efficiency of the heating system is less important because the heating system will get used less than the air conditioning system.

Another implication of the Phoenix climate is that a heat pump makes a lot of sense for many Phoenix homeowners.  Heat pumps are the most energy efficient and cost effective heating alternatives but lose some efficiency at temperatures below freezing.  Such low temperatures are rarely encountered in the Phoenix area.

A reputable local certified HVAC contractor can help you select a new energy efficient HVAC system that it right for your area. Just explain to them clearly what your budget is, and what you are trying to get out of their services.
